Blessed Miguel Pro was a Catholic priest in Mexico during a time when the government was actively persecuting the Church, closing churches and making it illegal for priests to publicly carry out their ministry. But Fr. Pro kept going. He celebrated Mass in secret, heard confessions, brought the Eucharist to people, and even used disguises to move around without being caught.
Eventually he was arrested and sentenced to death. On November 23, 1927, he stood before the firing squad, stretched out his arms in the form of a cross, and gave one final proclamation of faith:
¡Viva Cristo Rey!
"Long Live Christ the King!"

There is something phenominal about that image of Blessed Miguel standing before the firing squad. The Mexican government intended images like this to strike fear into those who continued to practice Catholicism. Instead, they had the opposite effect. People rallied around his witness, and his final cry, “Viva Cristo Rey!”, has echoed through the Church ever since.
Miguel Pro wasn’t a soldier or a revolutionary. He was a priest who simply refused to stop bringing Jesus Christ to people in his community, even when doing so could cost him everything.
It’s a pretty simple message.
Christ is King. Yesterday, today, and no matter what the world around us decides to do.
